Island Children’s Dentistry, is the latest —and we believe the best— pediatric dental practice serving Northern Virginia (Vienna, McLean, Oakton, Tysons Corner, Falls Church, Great Falls) and headed up by Dr. Gema Island, a gifted pediatric dentist and caring Mom herself.
A great dental practice designed just for kids —and fun too. We think the combination is a much better way to keep your children’s smiles the brightest and happiest ever, and to give you the peace of mind knowing your kids have the best dental care available.

Dr. Gema Island is a pediatric dentist, a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and a member of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, but most importantly, Dr. Gema is a mother first. She knows that, as scary as it may be for your child to go to the dentist, it’s not less scary for the parents and, therefore, she’s dedicated to providing the highest quality of dental care in the most gentle, positive and enthusiastic manner possible.
As a healthcare provider, Dr. Gema
understands the need to explain all the procedures to be performed on a little patient. As a mother, she makes sure these procedures are thoroughly understood by parents; peace of mind and situation awareness are key to develop a trustful parent-pediatric dentist relation. She combines her academic background, research experience, clinical skills and mother’s touch to deliver the best to her little patients and their parents. Dr. Gema obtained her Board certification in 2006, and did 3 years of residency at TUFTS University in Boston, MA. While at TUFTS, she received the prestigious Bates Award for her postgraduate research and, in her senior year, she won the Aesthetic Dentistry Challenge. She has published articles in peer review journals and has lectured nationally and internationally on different topics, and also participated in the Infant Oral Care and Prevention of Early Childhood Caries Project at San Francisco General Hospital.
Island Children’s Dentistry is committed to delivering the highest quality of care using the latest techniques and equipment. Dr. Gema has a special permit by the State of Virginia to provide conscious and IV sedation to her anxious patients, including Nitrous Oxide and Wand Anesthesia, along with Laser Dentistry, to reduce pain. As a mom —and dentist — minimizing fears and puting a smile on a child’s face brings her joy. Dr. Gema is originally from Mexico, is married and
has two kids, Becky and Eddie. When she’s not taking good care of her little patients, she enjoys playing tennis, going to the ballet and traveling.
Dr. Courtney Ullrich graduated magna cum laude with a degree in biology from Dickinson College where I was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa society. She received her Doctorate of Dental Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. After four years in Philadelphia, she moved to Boston to attend the Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard School of Dental Medicine general practice residency. Surviving only one New England winter, she then moved to New York and completed her orthodontic residency as chief resident at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She has been happily practicing orthodontics for over ten years.
Originally from Northwestern Pennsylvania Dr. Ullrich’s love for the outdoors and desire for a more temperate climate led her to Northern Virginia, the place she now proudly calls home. She spends her free time running, hiking, biking, reading, and enjoying good food with family and friends
